La S/S Città di Tripoli, fu
costruita nel 1915 ad Ancona- Italia, apparteneva alla siciliana società
Società di Navigazione Sicilia di Palermo. Nel 1926 fu acquistato

in 1932 following the merger of the CITRA with the shipping company Florio in Tirrenia Flotte Riunite Florio-CITRA, switch to the new company. In 1936 the Tirrenia Flotte Riunite becomes Società Anonima Tirrenia di Navigazione, headquartered in Naples. The December 22, 1940 was requisitioned by the Royal Navy in Naples, remaining merchant ship was used primarily as transport troops in the Aegean Sea. On the evening of July 1, 1941 the CITTA' DI TRIPOLI left Porto Vathy on the island of Samos, in convoy with the ship CITTA' DI SAVONA, with the escort of the torpedo boat LIBRA. The two merchant ships were returning to Piraeus to Samos after transporting troops assigned to the garrison of the island (the first units of the Division 'Cuneo' in the transfer from the Cyclades Sporades was started). At six in the morning of July 2, an aircraft of the Luftwaffe joined the convoy to provide anti-submarine escort. Neither LIBRA, they noticed the plane of the British submarine presence TORBAY under the command of Lieutenant Commander Antohony Cecil Capel Miers. At 7:22 (Now the Torbay board, one hour ahead of Italian time), 4.5 miles for 304 ° from Punta San Nicolò, the TORBAY launched three torpedoes at the merchant's head - the city of Tripoli - from a distance of 3000 meters, and two minutes later he threw three more against bottom merchant (the CITTA' DI SAVONA). The plane was the first to sight the wakes of the torpedoes, giving immediately reporting. Even the same CITTA' DI TRIPOLI sighted direct weapons against it, and it is turning began to groped to avoid them, but the maneuver had just begun when the ship was hit by a torpedo amidships on the starboard side. It was 6:23 (7:25 for the time of Torbay): the ship sank at the point 37 ° 41 'N and 24 ° 15' E (or 37 ° 42 'N and 24 ° 16' E), in the Zea canal, south of Athens and north of Zea. LIBRA while he carried on alleged attacker boat position to bombard you with depth charges (he threw 18 between 7:30 and 8:40, but no nearby exploded at TORBAY ), the CITTA' DI SAVONA drew rescued 48 of the 59 crew members the CITTA' DI TRIPOLI The eleven were missing.
