Questa
nave fu ordinata dal Lloyd Triestino nel 1960 , insieme alla gemella
GUGLIELMO MARCONI per
essere impiegata sulle rotte dall'Italia all'Australia. Entrata in
servizio il 23 marzo 1963 fu inizialmente impiegata nelle crociere
del Mediterraneo.Il 22.04.1963 effettuò il viaggio minaugurale
da Genova a Sydney , in Australia. Nel novembre dello stesso anno,
entrò in servizio anche la gemella GUGLIELMO
MARCONI . In origine le navi effettuavano il viaggio di andata
e ritorno per l' Australia passando per il Canale di Suez , in seguito
effettuavano il viaggio di ritorno in Europa attraverso il Canale
di Panama .Qualche volta per raggiungere l'Australia passavano l'Australia
per il Capo di Buona Speranza. Anche queste due navi risentirono della
crisi petrolifera del 1973 e dell'aumento dei voli internazionali
. IL GALILEI a seguito di una collisione con la barriera corallina
al largo della costa dell'Africa occidentale avvenuta 13 gennaio 1975
rientrò a genova per essere riparato. Riprese servizio con
la stessa linea fino al 1977 poi fu messa in disarmo fino all'ottobre
dello stesso anno per essere trasformata in nave da crociera .Il 24
marzo 1979, iniziò le crociere per la Società Italia
Crociere (di proprietà di Italia Navigazione , che ha anche
proprietà Lloyd Triestino ) , ma nel novembre dello stesso
hanno fu ritirata dal sevizio e posta in disarmo.
Nel 1983 fu acquistata dal Chandris Group , fu ristrutturata nuovamente
e furono create delle cabine supplementari sul ponte di pruavia. Rinominata
GALILEO . nel 1984 iniziò le crociere nei Caraibi per
conto di Chandris "' marchio Fantasy Cruises . A seguito del
crollo di Home Lines nel 1988 i dirigenti Chandris ' decisero di creare
un nuovo marchio esclusivo per conquistare il segmento di mercato
occupato da Home Lines. La nave fu nuovamente sottoposta ad un massiccio
restayling che costò svariati milioni di dollari presso i Lloyd
Werft , Bremerhaven , in Germania , i lavori si protrassero tra ottobre
1989 e febbraio 1990. Furono ricostruiti la maggior parte degli interni
, ed esternamente fu allargata la struttura posteriore. Il 1 °
marzo 1990 fu messa in servizio rinominata MERIDIAN, fu la
la prima nave a vestire il nuovo marchio Celebrity Cruises , effettuando
crociere nei Caraibi e il servizio di Boston / New York - Bermuda
. Nel 1997 , a seguito dell'acquisizione di Celebrity Cruises da parte
di Royal Caribbean International, la nave fu venduta a Sun Cruises
, che la rinominò SUN VISTA.
Nel pomeriggio del 20 maggio 1999 stava rientrando a Singapore dopo
una crociera a Phuket , in Thailandia , quando a causa di un malfunzionamento
di una centralina in sala macchine scoppio un incendio che in breve
tempo si diffuse in tutta la nave . Furono chiamati rapidamente i
soccorsi che arrivarono intorno alle 18:30 . Nel frattempo , i passeggeri
(472) e gli uomini dell'equipaggio (672) furono imbarcati sulle lance
di salvataggio ed abbandonarono la nave . La nave cominciò
ad affondare ed 01:22 del 21 Maggio 1999 affondò in circa 200
metri d'acqua a circa 60 miglia nautiche a sud dell'isola di Penang
, ed a 50 miglia nautiche a ovest di Port Weld , nello Stretto di
Malacca . Fortunatamente non vi furono vittime, solo lievi feriti.

In the afternoon of 20 May 1999 was returning to Singapore after a
cruise in Phuket, Thailand, when due to a malfunction of a control
unit in the engine room burst a fire that quickly spread throughout
the ship. They were called quickly rescue that arrived around 18:30
. Meanwhile , passengers (472) and the crew ( 672 ) were loaded onto
lifeboats and abandoned the ship. The ship began to sink and the May
21, 1999 1:22 sank in about 200 feet of water about 60 nautical miles
south of Penang Island , and 50 nautical miles west of Port Weld,
in the Straits of Malacca. Fortunately there were no fatalities ,
only minor injuries.
