INFORMAZIONI STORICHE

Questa nave fu ordinata dal Lloyd Triestino nel 1960 , insieme alla gemella GUGLIELMO MARCONI per essere impiegata sulle rotte dall'Italia all'Australia. Entrata in servizio il 23 marzo 1963 fu inizialmente impiegata nelle crociere del Mediterraneo.Il 22.04.1963 effettuò il viaggio minaugurale da Genova a Sydney , in Australia. Nel novembre dello stesso anno, entrò in servizio anche la gemella GUGLIELMO MARCONI . In origine le navi effettuavano il viaggio di andata e ritorno per l' Australia passando per il Canale di Suez , in seguito effettuavano il viaggio di ritorno in Europa attraverso il Canale di Panama .Qualche volta per raggiungere l'Australia passavano l'Australia per il Capo di Buona Speranza. Anche queste due navi risentirono della crisi petrolifera del 1973 e dell'aumento dei voli internazionali . IL GALILEI a seguito di una collisione con la barriera corallina al largo della costa dell'Africa occidentale avvenuta 13 gennaio 1975 rientrò a genova per essere riparato. Riprese servizio con la stessa linea fino al 1977 poi fu messa in disarmo fino all'ottobre dello stesso anno per essere trasformata in nave da crociera .Il 24 marzo 1979, iniziò le crociere per la Società Italia Crociere (di proprietà di Italia Navigazione , che ha anche proprietà Lloyd Triestino ) , ma nel novembre dello stesso hanno fu ritirata dal sevizio e posta in disarmo.
Nel 1983 fu acquistata dal Chandris Group , fu ristrutturata nuovamente e furono create delle cabine supplementari sul ponte di pruavia. Rinominata GALILEO . nel 1984 iniziò le crociere nei Caraibi per conto di Chandris "' marchio Fantasy Cruises . A seguito del crollo di Home Lines nel 1988 i dirigenti Chandris ' decisero di creare un nuovo marchio esclusivo per conquistare il segmento di mercato occupato da Home Lines.
