MIRCEA
è stata costruita tra il 1938 e il 1939 nei cantieri navali
Blohm e Voss, Amburgo, Germania ed è stata commissionata alla
Royal Navy rumena il 17 maggio 1939. MIRCEA è una barca a vela
di classe A (barca a vela a tre alberi).
Il nome di MIRCEA deriva dal sovrano vallaciano Mircea cel Batran (1386-1418), che estese il suo regno fino al Mar Nero. MIRCEA è il continuatore della prima nave scuola rumena, in servizio tra il 1882 e il 1940. Durante i suoi 65 anni di esistenza, MIRCEA ha compiuto numerosi viaggi di formazione, il più famoso è stato quello del 1976, quando è stata coinvolta nel festival “OPSAIL '76”, in occasione del Bicentenario della Celebrazione dell'Indipendenza USA. MIRCEA ha quattro navi gemelle: “EAGLE” (USA), “GORCH FOCK” (Germania), “TOVARISCH” (Ucraina) e “SAGRES II” (Portogallo) Dopo l'ultima revisione, conclusa nel 2002, MIRCEA è una delle navi più moderne della sua classe.
