La nave da crociera Irpinia fu costruito nel 1929 dai cantieri da Swan Hunter sul fiume Tyne denominata fino al 1943 RIO JACHAL poi rinominata CAMPANA. Essa era impiegata per viaggi da Marsiglia fino alla costa orientale del Sud America. Dopo la caduta della Francia nel 1940, fu sequestrato dall' argentina, e fu denominato RIO JACHAL , In quel periodo fu impiegato per alcuni viaggi a New Orleans.
